When It’s Time To Pay the Piper, The Piper Gets His Due
Your conscience is the voice that calls you to the Adventure of Your Life. It is your compass for navigating times of uncertainty. It calls on you to be your most authentic, most courageous, most extraordinary self, and calls you out when you fall short.
No one can ever escape their conscience. You can try all the distractions and play all of the linguistic games you can think of, but your conscience always knows the truth. You can kick the reckoning with your conscience down the road, but when the road runs out, the bill comes due.
“Did you have the Adventure of Your Life? Did you transform all of your talent into skill and peak performance? Did you create the conditions for wellbeing for both yourself and your community? Did you make a meaningful contribution to your community? Or did you waste your talent and waste your time?”
If you find that framing provocative in a way that is uncomfortable, that is your conscience at work. You can confront and overcome that discomfort now, or you can kick the can down the road until there is no more road. Will reckoning with all of the talent and time you wasted be easier when you are 70? If you can confront and overcome the discomfort now, freedom is on the other side. The Adventure of Your Life is on the other side. Meaning, fulfillment, and contribution are on the other side.
Hell isn’t someplace you go after you die. It’s the place you go before you die when you look back on a lifetime of wasted talent and wasted opportunities. It’s being frozen on your deathbed, stuck with nothing but regret, resentment, and despair.
Heaven is flow, and flow is eternal. Flow removes time from your conscious experience. It is the alignment of conscience, mind, and body with zero latency and zero waste in the system. Flow is the optimal state of mind that produces peak performance and wellbeing. Flow is fun; meaningful and fulfilling fun. You can live a lifetime in a moment of flow, and you can live in flow every day.
So you can engage in the futile exercise that is trying to dodge your conscience every day, even though we know that no one can escape their conscience. Or you can align with your conscience, and you can have the Adventure of Your Life.
When you understand heaven and hell, you understand the stakes. You are all in, and you are in a race against time, entropy, and mortality, and those opponents are undefeated. You can live the life you envision for yourself, the life of peak performance and wellbeing. It all comes down to how you structure your days. Will you devote your time and attention to a futile attempt to dodge your conscience? Or will you devote your time and attention to the quest to transform all of your talent into skill and peak performance so you can have the Adventure of Your Life.
Will you answer the Call to Adventure? Will you follow your conscience, no matter what? Will you master your craft? Will you master the Fundamentals of Flow? Will you be the hero of your own journey?
